It happened the way most great ideas do: on vacation. A gaggle of girlfriends, a Blue Ridge Mountain house, a weekend that was supposed to be about hiking and rosé. Then someone pulled out a Mahjong set, and — well, the mountains could wait. Three days vanished. Nobody hiked anywhere. The tiles never left the table, and honestly? No regrets.

Turns out Mahjong is the perfect vacation game. It's clacky, clever, a little bit chaotic, and endlessly social — the kind of game that turns a rainy afternoon or a lazy porch evening into the story you tell for years ("remember when Susan called Mahjong at 11pm and flipped the whole table?"). The only catch: not everyone knows how to play this ancient game and almost nobody wants to be hauling their set through airport security, wedged between flip-flops and sunscreen.
